MIAA Tournament Information
The MIAA sponsors girls’ lacrosse two tournaments for varsity teams (Division 1 & Division 2) with North and South sectionals.
Visit http://miaa.net/alignments-09-13-home.htm for alignment information.
To qualify for their respective Division tournament a team must:
- Play a minimum of 10 games against MIAA recognized varsity teams
- Have a .500 or better winning percentage OR be 1st Place or Runner-Up in their MIAA recognized league (see Tournament Director to confirm your league is eligible for both automatic qualifiers)
- Complete & submit accurate MIAA tournament forms prior to deadlines
- Report results for remaining games directly to respective Tournament Director prior to the cut-off date
It is the responsibility of the coach or school official to meet the above criteria and to notify their Tournament Director if there is a delay in reporting outstanding results and/or if they are qualifying based on 1st Place or Runner-Up status in their MIAA recognized league.
As League championships may be determined based on the final game(s) of the season it is impossible for the Tournament Director or Seeding Committee to track this information.
Teams submitting forms after the deadline must contact their Tournament Director immediately to ensure receipt.
- The same Seeding Committee ranks the Division 1 North/South and Division 2 North/South tournaments.
- Members of the Committee and members of the Officials Committee notify school officials of their seeding and first match-ups.
- In the event that more than 16 teams qualify in a sectional there will be “play in” games scheduled for the following Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
- No teams will have games on the same day as their school graduations.
Please note - Tournament Directors do their best to avoid other conflicts so make sure to include your significant events (Proms, Class Day, Senior Events, Banquets, etc.) with your tournament entry forms or email them directly to your Tournament Director.
- Winning coaches MUST call their Tournament Director immediately following their game as well as the Boston Globe (800-464-1819) and Boston Herald (800-232-2860)

SEEDING COMMITTEE
The seeding committee consists of a coach representative (typically EMGLCA Reps) from every MIAA recognized girls lacrosse league as well as the MIAA girls lacrosse At-Large member, who meet for the purpose of executing the MIAA approved seeding process for the Division 1 & 2 Eastern Massachusetts State Tournaments under the direction of the Division 1 & 2 Tournament Directors.
The seeding committee utilizes the results and schedules as reported on the tournament entry forms.
The seeding meeting is open for observation by any individual but only committee members may vote or address the group.
MIAA Seeding Process
Also available at - http://www.miaa.net/Girls-LAX-Seeding-Process.pdf
Step 1: Overall win %
- Teams are ranked based on win %
Teams with identical overall win % are given the same ranking – 1 being the highest
Success vs. Tournament teams
B) Teams are ranked based on the # of wins vs. teams that qualify for tournament (no modifications for wins in/out of Division).
If teams have the same # of wins vs. tournament teams then the team with the higher number of games vs. tournament teams is ranked higher.
Step 2: Seeding Committee Rank
Members of the seeding committee rank all teams separately within each Division. Committee uses information in Step 1, head to head competition, record against higher seeded teams (based on Step 1), record against common opponents, strength of schedule, and any other factors the committee deems appropriate in separating the quality of one team from another.
Step 3: The rankings from each of the 3 categories above (A, B, Step 2) will be tabulated to establish the seeding of teams.
TEAM % OF WINS + WINS/TOURNAMENT TEAMS + COMMITTEE RANK
= FINAL RANK
In the event of a tie, the Committee Rank will break any and all ties
